Baix Empordà County is located between the Costa Brava, the Gavarres Mountains, and the Montgrí Massif. The area is dotted with small towns and villages that recall the history and the economy of the area. Both the inland medieval villages and the coastal towns have spectacular views, unique features, and charming nooks and crannies that are all worth visiting.

In the centre of the Costa Brava, the rocky coastline flanked by pine groves conceals many small beaches and secluded coves. Green and blue merge to create this time-honoured landscape – discover it by walking along the well-mapped and signposted coastal paths.
Several of the towns along the coast play a major role in the local economy. The most important port is in Palamós, where large cruise ships berth all year round, and the main fish market for the area is held every day, where visitors can observe the fish auction as it takes place. Platja d'Aro is the leisure centre of the area and Palafrugell, with nearby Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu beaches, is the capital of the cork industry. Begur is noteworthy for its stunning “Indiana” houses, and for the spectacular coves of Aiguagelida, Aiguablava, Fornells, Sa Tuna, Cap Sa Sal, Aiguafreda and Sa Riera. Thousands of divers from all over the world come to L’Estartit every year to explore the seabed around the Medes Islands, listed as a nature park and a protected natural space.

Do not forget to venture inland and visit Pals, Monells and Peratallada, examples of well-preserved medieval villages where the houses and cobbled streets recall past times, all located in the surroundings of the county capital, La Bisbal d'Empordà, known for its long-standing pottery tradition.
